Autonomous IT Architectures
Synopsis
In the course of the increasing dependence of all areas of life on the functioning of information and communication systems, the reliability of an IT infrastructure is is a topic of central importance. The term reliability is intended to integrate various aspects that are often considered separately: The availability of systems and services as well as their security in the sense of confidentiality, integrity and authenticity. For human administrators, the The complexity of an IT infrastructure, which is hardly manageable for human administrators and therefore difficult to control, has itself become a considerable weak point. New approaches in system architecture and design methodology must therefore be taken. Of particular interest are approaches that respond to the growing complexity through autonomous behavior and independent action. As part of a research cooperation with the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the current research activities and development approaches in the field of autonomous systems were in the field of autonomous systems were recorded, organized and evaluated. The aim is to assess the respective potential and also the associated vulnerabilities of different architectural approaches and to identify overlaps or complementarities. Hardware, software and integrated architectures will be considered, both at the both at the component and at the system level. Recent developments in engineering and development methods are also to be considered.
The result of the research cooperation is to represent the basis for a technology assessment and further initiatives of the BSI in the field of autonomous IT systems. As the central security service provider of the federal government, the BSI coordinates research activities in this area and formulates requirements regarding IT security. The research project is supported by the Future Fund, part of the federal government's high-tech strategy.
