Realization of Autonomy in a Publish/Subscribe Middleware

Synopsis

As part of a research cooperation with the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), this project investigates the integration of autonomy mechanisms into a publish/subscribe middleware. The focus is on tolerating broker failures and adapting the overlay network and the routing algorithms used to the message flows currently occurring in the system. The goal is to keep the system operational and in as good a system state as possible at all times. The challenge is that the mechanisms used are not independent of each other and uncoordinated application of them can lead to undesired system behavior (e.g., oscillation). The project will develop the autonomous middleware REBECA_A and a demonstrator based on it. The demonstrator shall illustrate the realized autonomous mechanisms in a simple way also to non-experts.

As the central security service provider for the federal government, the BSI coordinates research activities in this area and formulates requirements regarding IT security. The research project is supported by the Future Fund, part of the German government's high-tech strategy.
